同賞は、2001年に「German Prize for Communications Design」を引き継ぐ形で設立されました。「German Prize for Communications Design」は、1993年設立、PAGE誌で国際デザイン賞トップ10にも選ばれた、国際的に知名度の高い賞です。
2007年度は、34の国と地域から3,880点の応募があり、336点が受賞、このうち特に優れた23点が「red dot: best of the best」に選ばれ、さらに、3点が「red dot:grand prix」、学生賞である「reddot: junior prize for the best student work」には1点が選ばれ、受賞作品は、12月6日に発表されました。
