ドイツで開催される同賞は1954年に設立されました。以来、毎年世界約30カ国、約1,500点のエントリーがあり、国際的にも高い評価を得ているデザイン賞のひとつとして知られています。時代のニーズに答えるべく、3年前よりプロダクトデザイン賞に加え、コミュニケーション賞を新設、2部門に構成されました。また、プロダクトデザイン賞には製品コンセプトを競う学生部門も設けられています。
今年度のプロダクトデザイン賞（iF design award 2004）には1,458点の応募が寄せられ、総数503点が受賞。その中から2部門でゴールド賞17点、シルバー賞25点が選出されました。
ここでは、ゴールド賞17点と学生部門でEUR 3000を獲得した上位受賞作品4点をご紹介します。
