同賞は、ビジネスにおけるグッドデザインと広告の重要性に対する認識を広げること、次世代の教育を目的として、1962年よりスタートしました。カテゴリーは27分野にわたり、アートディレクションから、建築、ミュージックビデオ、写真、コミュニケーションまで幅広く網羅します。毎年、55カ国を超える国々から、約21,500点の応募があります。審査は各専門分野で活躍する300名余りの審査員によって行なわれます。
2004年度は、世界58カ国から14,000点のエントリーがありました。今年の審査も各専門分野で活躍する300名余りの審査員によって行なわれました。結果、「silver award(yellow pencil)」に53点が選出。中でも優れたデザインに贈られる賞「gold award(black pencil)」に2点が選ばれました。尚、受賞した53点は「the D&AD Annual & Showreel」で展示されます。
